It will be a healthy start for Buckland Street Childcare children after they kicked the year off with a five plus a day picnic.

The annual pool-side picnic usually consists of a barbecue. This year staff made fruit and vegetables the star of the evening.

And it was only the beginning of a year full of changes according to office manager Megan Curtis-Sergeant.

‘‘We’re reviewing our food policies, we want to get the parents on board.’’

She said the centre provides about 60 per cent of the children’s food per day.

And by getting parents on board she hoped it would make a change in the home.

‘‘ Teach them good habits now and it will last them a lifetime.’’

Last week’s picnic was a success, she said, with children eating the fruit before going for the sausages.

HEALTHY DINNER: Aaliyah Dehar, left, teacher Tania Ward, Tamsin Needham (back), Noah and Wyatt Davies enjoy the fresh fruit.
