Roundabout project goes over budget

South Waikato News - - NEWS / HE PU¯RONGORONGO -

Planned maintenance to a Tokoroa roundabout has gone over budget after and taken longer than expected.

The South Waikato District Council project budgeted at $105,000 was planned to make the roundabout slightly larger and add additional kerbing.

The revamp was supposed to improve manoeuvrability for vehicles, specifically for trucks, and slow down traffic because of concerns over speed, roading manager Gordon Naidoo said.

However, ‘‘ unforseen circumstances’’ have delayed the project.

‘‘Some of the subgrade material was softer than expected. This sometimes happens with roading jobs.

Council do testing at various areas, to gain an average assessment of the pavement. Once you remove the top pavement layer and expose the subgrade layer, sometimes softer pockets become apparent.’’

This meant the soft areas needed to be removed and entirely replaced, which has slowed the process down.

While the extra costs have yet to be added up it is catered for through the overall roading budgets, he said.

The Logan St roundabout has been in the construction phase for several weeks after unexpected issues.
