Tirau residents now have a memorial plaque to pay tribute to servicemen and women who fought and took part in peace keeping missions around the world. Costing around $500 RSA District President Clive Collingwood has installed a plaque outside the War Memorial Hall. A special dedication will take place on ANZAC day. Measuring 2.2 metres long and 300 millimetres Collingwood said it was time Tirau had something to acknowledge New Zealand’s role. “I think the feedback will be good. I’m pretty impressed with it.” Medical personnel and peace keepers have also been recognized. A total of $250 has come from the mayoral fund and Collingwood will be reimbursed by the Matamata RSA. “At the end of the day it is part of the memorial.” A number of plaques with the names of soldiers hang on the walls inside the hall but Collingwood said the outside was bland and needed something else. “I wanted something there and being the centenary period I thought it was ideal.”
