Southern United remain atop of the Waikato Division One competition after an absorbing 33-16 away victory over Te Rapa.

The visitors set the foundation for the result in the opening 40 minutes before the home side surged back into the contest in the latter stages.

Surf kicked off the scoring with loose forward Owen Pomare crossing for a try in his return to the side.

Fellow forward Dennis Quensell rumbled through the defence to extend Southern’s advantage.

Te Rapa managed to climb back with a pair of penalties before the Tokoroa club reclaimed the ascendancy with two classy tries to winger Damian John and fullback Sean Mckain.

Down 26-6 after halftime, Te Rapa showed their determination and muscled their way over for two tries.

Despite a scrappy final quarter it was prop Jamin Pinkerton who had the last day powering over for the try.

Meanwhile the senior B’s picked up a deserved 34-0 shutout result running in five tries.

In the comingt weekend Surf will be hosting its neighbours Putaruru.
