Local derbies bring out best

Local derbies always tend to bring out the best in teams and it was no different for rivals Southern United and Putaruru.

Surf were able to establish their dominance to earn a deserved 50-0 victory over their close neighbours to remain on top of the division one standings.

The hosts were quick off the mark and managed to cross when fullback Zane Costar broke through for an early lead.

Moments later, hard running loose forward Owen Pomare barged over for the first of his three tries to extend the home sides advantage.

Southern patiently went about building pressure on their opponents and were rewarded when Costar dotted down twice more.

Pomare was amongst the action again when a barnstorming run saw him brush off tacklers to race 50 metres and score right on halftime.

Southern proved too strong as Pomare and Costar bagged second half tries on the back of superb team play and Chance Brown capped off the outstanding team performance with a late try.

Meanwhile the senior B’s contest saw Putaruru overcome their counterparts with a hard fought 26-17 result.

Surf are away next weekend to Frankton while Putaruru will host Hinuera.
