Toko­roa Po­lice have re­sponded to 71 in­ci­dents in the last week with 19 of th­ese re­lated to fam­ily vi­o­lence.

His­tor­i­cally Po­lice see a rise in in­ci­dents at this time of the year and we take fam­ily vi­o­lence se­ri­ously said Se­nior Sergeant Hen­der­son.

‘‘It can be dif­fi­cult to help some­one who is in an abu­sive re­la­tion­ship so I would like to pro­vide the fol­low­ing sug­ges­tions to fam­ily and friends who are won­der­ing what they can do to help.’’

Find a safe place and time to talk about it.

❚Lis­ten and be sup­port­ive with­out be­ing judg­men­tal.

❚Pro­vide prac­ti­cal as­sis­tance with things like child care and trans­port.

❚Dis­cuss op­tions such as a safety plan.

❚Help them find out what help is avail­able in our com­mu­nity.

❚Re­mind them no one de­serves to be abused for any rea­son.

❚Check that the chil­dren are phys­i­cally safe.

‘‘Re­mem­ber that peo­ple liv­ing with fam­ily vi­o­lence will of­ten feel iso­lated so your role is to pro­vide sup­port by be­ing there.’’

❚Call the Po­lice im­me­di­ately in an emer­gency or if you are afraid for any­one’s safety.
