RISE IN FAMILY VIOLENCE
Tokoroa Police have responded to 71 incidents in the last week with 19 of these related to family violence.
Historically Police see a rise in incidents at this time of the year and we take family violence seriously said Senior Sergeant Henderson.
‘‘It can be difficult to help someone who is in an abusive relationship so I would like to provide the following suggestions to family and friends who are wondering what they can do to help.’’
Find a safe place and time to talk about it.
❚Listen and be supportive without being judgmental.
❚Provide practical assistance with things like child care and transport.
❚Discuss options such as a safety plan.
❚Help them find out what help is available in our community.
❚Remind them no one deserves to be abused for any reason.
❚Check that the children are physically safe.
‘‘Remember that people living with family violence will often feel isolated so your role is to provide support by being there.’’
❚Call the Police immediately in an emergency or if you are afraid for anyone’s safety.
