Free dog poo bag trial at lake park

South Waikato News - - Your Paper, Your Place - LUKE KIRKEBY

Stumbling upon a pile of dog poo while walking around or having a picnic at Tokoroa’s Lake Moananui is never fun.

It’s hoped that will be a thing of the past now that a free trial dog poo bag dispenser has been installed along the path near the Maraetai Rd entrance to the park.

The South Waikato District Council Dog Control Policy requires the owner of any dog that defecates in a public place or land or premises other than that occupied by the owner to immediately remove the faeces.

If this is not adhered to, Section 68 of the Dog Control Act allows local authorities to issue infringement notices.

While there are many responsible owners who bring plastic bags to the park, others don’t.

South Waikato District Council group manager regulatory Sharon Robinson said she was pleased to announce a dispenser had been installed by the lake during the council’s meeting on Thursday.

She said it had been put in place by the company at no cost to the council during the trial .

‘‘There are about one thousand bags in the dispenser and if it is successful we will bring it back to the council but we don’t yet have a budget or know the cost to install or plan of where they will be installed,’’ she said.
