English squad visits town
.Tokoroa High School’s sports students were put to the test during a one day sports exchange visit from St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School recently.
The Catholic high school, which is based in Featherstone, Yorkshire, England, brought an under 15s football team, netball team and rugby league team to test the best that Tokoroa High School could offer.
Teacher Robin Miller said the students were first welcomed at Te Whanau a Noa Marae before all teams went into battle mode with the netball teams playing off at the South Waikato Sport and Events Centre and both the soccer and rugby league teams playing at Tokoroa High School.
‘‘Tokoroa High School was outclassed in all three matches with St Wilfrid’s soccer team winning seven nil, the netball team beating the locals 29 to 10, and the rugby league match ousted out by a very well drilled St Wilfrid’s side,’’ she said.
‘‘Tokoroa High School however managed to salvage some dignity by hosting the visitors to a formal dinner and a cultural experience that they will never forget.’’
Miller said tour leader Ian Mcabe was overwhelmed by the generosity and hospitality of the local school and admired the genuine friendliness of the Tokoroa community.
She said the 38 students and five staff left ‘‘more than happy’’.
