South Waikato News - - Your Paper, Your Place -

So the Olympics will be well underway by the time you read this.

It’s a strange time for me because as a Kiwi raised in Australia, who has now come back to New Zealand later in life, I always feel torn on who to support.

I have citizenship in both countries and a parent born in both countries - so if the Kiwis win a medal I’m pleased, but if the Aussies do, I’m also happy.

The trouble is i’m always being told I need to pick a side, especially by all my fellow Kiwi colleagues.

The trouble is I just can’t, and don’t think i’ll ever be able to.

I feel a sense of pride when I hear both anthems played.

It’s been 10 years since I left Brisbane, but hearing Advance Australia Fair play as a sport person stand on the podium still makes my heart sing.

So no, I’m not going to stop supporting both countries.

What I will do is cheer extra loud for our South Waikato Athletes over there in Rio.
