Date turns into SW crime spree
Four stolen cars, a police chase, four wrecked cars and eight youths facing charges is the cost ticked up by three Auckland boys trying to meet a Taupo girl who’d arranged the date on social media.
As if that weren’t enough, the Taupo girl tore off her electronic monitoring bracelet and used a stolen car to track them down when they didn’t turn up.
The events started on Saturday when a police pursuit of a Honda Accord stolen from Hamilton began near Tokoroa.
The pursuit was abandoned by police due to the risk to public safety, Taupo police Senior Sergeant Tony Jeurissen said.
The car was later seen being driven near the intersection of Oruanui Road and SH1, about 20km north Taupo and road spikes were used to stop it. After hitting the road spikes, the car rolled and came to a stop on its roof at the intersection.
Three Auckland teenagers were not injured in the crash and were arrested. They were age 15, 14 and 12.’’
Police then found the three had

stolen two other cars between Auckland and Hamilton as they were ‘‘determined to drive to Taupo to meet a young Taupo girl’’ they’d met on social media.
The 16-year-old girl, meanwhile, got impatient when the three boys failed to make the date.
So she removed her electronic monitoring bracelet on about 8am on Saturday, sparking another police search.
‘‘The 16-year-old girl was found by police staff with four other juvenile males in a stolen vehicle taken earlier from Taupo very close to where the earlier stolen vehicle had crashed,’’ Jeurissen said.
‘‘This stolen motor vehicle, containing these five juveniles, had also crashed.’’
Police, helped by a passing motorist, managed to corral the five juveniles near the second crashed motor vehicle.
But while they waited for assistance to arrive, the 16 year old girl made an escape attempt in the police car she was detained in.
‘‘She has climbed into the driver’s seat of the patrol car and driven the car a very short distance and crashed into the side of the car belonging to the member of public who was assisting police,’’ Jeurissen said.
