Iron­maori event com­ing to Taupo in the new year

Iron­men and Iron­maori will both be calling Taupo home next year.

Tuwhare­toa Maori Trust Board an­nounced it has se­cured the rights to host the iconic Iron­maori event in Taupo next March.

The new event will be called Iron­man Taupo-nui-a-tia and will take place on march 18.

Chief Ex­ec­u­tive Topia Rameka said the Trust Board is proud to be the main spon­sor and is com­mit­ted to mak­ing the event a suc­cess.

‘‘Iron­maori Taupo-nui-a-tia will be an ex­cit­ing and fun event that is open to ev­ery­one,’’ he said.

‘‘For Nga¯ ti Tu¯ whare­toa, this kau­papa is re­ally im­por­tant – it’s about sup­port­ing and en­cour­ag­ing healthy life­styles for the whole wha¯ nau and com­mu­nity.

‘‘We will be en­cour­ag­ing as many lo­cals as pos­si­ble to en­ter the event,

Iron­maori Founder Heather Skip­worth said Iron­maori is con­tin­u­ing to grow in pop­u­lar­ity, and will be held in five lo­ca­tions around New Zealand in 2017.

‘‘We are ex­pect­ing around 15,000 par­tic­i­pants over­all, with Napier host­ing five of the 10 events this com­ing year,’’ she said.

The Taupo event in­cludes sev­eral adult and chil­dren’s cat­e­gories next year.
