Coin toss in young cricket fan’s favour

Eight-year-old Hohepa Watson had his first shot at fame on Sunday.

The Tokoroa cricket fan won the chance to walk on to Seddon Park’s cricket pitch in Hamilton with New Zealand Black Caps captain Kane Williamson.

There he tossed a coin to decide who batted the first innings during the team’s match against Australia.

The memorable moment came courtesy of ANZ’S Coin Toss Kid competition, which is running during the ANZ International Series.

Hohepa, who goes to Tokoroa Central School said it was exciting but nerve-racking walking out onto the pitch.

‘‘I felt good but I was really nervous and I said to Kane how do you win a coin toss?’’ he said.

He said luck appeared to be on his side with Williamson picking tails and flipping the coin to land it.

Hohepa, who plays cricket three nights a week at home, said he enjoys everything about playing the sport and even brought a special outfit for the occasion.

‘‘My mum signed me up and when she told me I had won, I was so happy and wanted to tell my sisters so we could have a party to celebrate,’’ he said.

‘‘They have not said anything about it though because they are jealous.’’

He went to the game with his Dad Joseph and mum Moana who both said he ‘‘loved it’’.

‘‘We were not allowed to go out with him so a lady from ANZ took him out and once they did the coin toss they moved to the side and had a talk with Williamson and got a photo,’’ Joseph said.

‘‘I was very proud of him, especially when they announced his name over the loud speakers so everyone could hear. I was like that is my son.’’

ANZ is giving 22 young cricket fans throughout New Zealand the opportunity to toss coins during the series.

Spokeswoman Sue Mcgregor said the bank was pleased to be able to offer young Kiwis the opportunity.

‘‘We’re passionate about not only supporting elite cricket in New Zealand, but also all the grassroots fans and cricketers,’’ she said.
