Tokoroa cafe takes out national award
‘‘I nearly cried when they announced the winners. I had to fight back the tears.’’
A ham and cheese omelette made to a magnificent standard and some good Kiwi banter has seen a Tokoroa cafe declared a town treasure and take out a top national award.
Rosebery St’s Rumbly Tums cafe, which has a focus on healthy old fashioned food all made inhouse, was named Hellers Classic Kiwi Award during the 2017 Meadow Fresh New Zealand Cafe of the Year awards held in Auckland on Thursday night.
Owner Cushla Arbuckle said she couldn’t be more proud.
‘‘I nearly cried when they announced the winners. I had to fight back the tears,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s just amazing to receive this recognition from the judges and that we were good enough to take out the category.’’
Judges anonymously visited each of the finalist cafes before selecting the winners which Arbuckle put down to her team’s dedication.
‘‘They based the judging on the welcome when they walked in the door, the ambience, quality of cabinet food, service, and the coffee,’’ she said.
‘‘I don’t think I was working when the judges came around so it really does come down to my staff and it’s nice to know they are still behaving when I’m not there.’’
Judging, tasting, and deliberating was conducted by a highly-experienced panel led by esteemed judge Kerry Tyack, who is also the head judge of the Cuisine New Zealand Good Food Awards.
Tyack described Rumbly Tums as a ‘‘treasure in the heart of Tokoroa’’.
‘‘Ka pai Rumbly Tums. The warmth of your welcome, the generosity of your hospitality, your choice of music, and your magnificent ham and cheese omelette brought smiles to the faces of the judging team that lasted all day,’’ he said.
‘‘Homemade goodies are always fresh for those dropping in for a quick bite or you can chose from the blackboard menu that shows what their locals love. Service to the table is prompt and the coffee is dark and strong coffee.’’
‘‘There’s friendly banter between the customers in for their takeaway coffee and enormous, freshly-made Edmonds Cookery Book inspired Yo-yo. All aspects of this cafe, down to the ingredients proclaim this cafe is a classic Kiwi treasure,’’ he said.
