Po­lice are still in­ves­ti­gat­ing a ‘‘com­plex’’ crash scene af­ter two mo­tor­cy­clists were killed when they col­lided with a tanker north of Toko­roa on Fri­day.

Emer­gency ser­vices were called to the scene on State High­way 1, about a kilo­me­tre north of the town, about 2:40pm on Fri­day.

One of the mo­tor­cy­clists who died was a 41-year-old man from Pu­taruru, the other a 59-year-old man from Hast­ings.

Po­lice will not be re­leas­ing the names of the two dead men un­til fam­ily have been no­ti­fied.

State High­way One was closed for more than six hours to al­low for a scene ex­am­i­na­tion, re­open­ing shortly af­ter 9:15pm on Fri­day.

Se­nior Sergeant Fane Troy of the Taupo po­lice said the Se­ri­ous Crash Unit would con­tinue to in­ves­ti­gate the cause of the ac­ci­dent.

‘‘The scene was com­plex and cov­ered a 200 me­tre sec­tion of the high­way.

Po­lice thanked mo­torists for their pa­tience with de­tours in place.
