Tokoroa collects toys for Edgecumbe
The Tokoroa City Lions hope to put smiles back on the faces of children affected by Edgecumbe’s severe flooding last month.
Around 1600 people were evacuated from their homes when the town’s river flood wall crumbled after ex-tropical Cyclone Debbie washed through.
As a result some families have lost everything.
So from Wednesday until Friday the Tokoroa City Lions are calling for people to donate good quality toys which will be passed on to children in Edgecumbe and surrounding communities.
Tokoroa City Lions member Barbara Taylor said a collection trailer will be stationed in Leith Pl each day where people can bring toys to donate.
‘‘Everyone is doing the necessities, the furniture, blankets and linen, so we’ve decided to do a toy collection for them,’’ she said.
She said all toys in good condition, except electronic and battery operated toys, were welcomed and especially toys for boys.
‘‘Everything will have to be laundered and sorted whether it’s clean or not, we have to do it, but it’s fair enough because we are not under stress,’’ she said.
Taylor said things still remain bad in the Edgecumbe area.
‘‘I rang the Edgecumbe Lions president and we had a long talk about the area and it is not only Edgecumbe. They have got the burst riverbank but Otakere and Taneatua people were completely rain flooded and they have largely been forgotten,’’ she said.
‘‘The president said they don’t expect some of their people to be back in their houses until Christmas. Isn’t that awful?’’
She said the Tokoroa City Lions will deliver the donated toys to the Lions in Whakatane as soon as everything has been sorted.
‘‘We will leave them there so they can do what they want with them because they know their district and their people. Everyone is registered with them,’’ she said.
‘‘The Edgecumbe Lions will probably combine with the Taneatua Lions to do what they need to do but we are not putting any restrictions on them because it’s for the kids, that is the point. Who knows what they have lost.’’
She said the trailer will be set up outside Tokoroa Clothing but she said she can also pick toys up if people let her know by phoning 021 071 0506.
If people can’t make it to Leith Pl they can also donate at Saint Mark’s by calling 021 258 6118.
