It is great to see improvements are on the cards for maternity services in Tokoroa.

While those who will benefit most from any improved service are probably not even a twinkle in the eye yet, it is something that anyone with an interest should be keeping a close eye on.

No doubt, anyone who has had to lie in the back of an ambulance for a lengthy trip to a neo-natal unit in their nearest main centre will tell you it is no fun and not a great start to parenthood.

Families and their communities benefit hugely from uncomplicated, well managed births and post-natal car.

This is an opportunity to take some of that stress out of the equation.

Health boards are always under enormous pressure to deliver the goods on time and on budget and babies are no exception. Changes like this are designed to deliver a better result for the same money.

That is usually easier said than done.
