Winston Peters is now second in the preferred PM stakes with 11 per cent. Bill English is on 26 per cent, Little’s deputy Jacinda Ardern is third, at 6 per cent and Little is on 5 per cent.

But English appears to have taken a hit over the Todd Barclay fiasco, slipping three points on the last poll.

Labour will be looking for a boost from its families package released on Tuesday.

The families package is expected to offer an alternative to National’s $2 billion a year families tax package in the budget.

National’s package included changes to tax thresholds, working for families payments and the accommodation supplement, boosting the average family income.

Labour’s winter energy payment will pay $700 for couples and parents with kids at home, and $450 for single people.
