Youths give elderly place to sit and wait
It is a case of different towns but same people.
That’s the thinking behind a new bus stop seat installed by a group of Putaruru College Students to help elderly bus users in Tokoroa.
The bus stop in Victoria Pl is mostly used by pensioners but there was nowhere to sit so Year 12 students Maxim Berger, Daniel Akkersma, and Hayden Saies were only too happy to help out.
Over the last few weeks they have been hard at work building a wood and metal seat which they installed at the bus stop on Thursday.
Woodwork teacher Marko Olls said it was all done in their own time.
‘‘All these guys are going to be builders, it’s what they want to do, so I mentioned to them that there was this need and they volunteered,’’ he said.
‘‘They have been great and have been working on it for a few months now in their spare time.’’
‘‘We may be in Putaruru but we are still part of this community so that’s the reason behind why we have done this,’’ he said.
Victoria Place Corporate Body Committee member and resident John Bray said the residents couldn’t be more thankful.
‘‘Most of us can drive our cars still but there are a lot of residents down here who can’t drive, whether that be because of a disability or eyesight, so they use the bus,’’ he said.
‘‘Now they can sit and wait if they are a little bit early. It is one of the few areas around here where we have now got a bus stop and a seat alongside it which I think is great, really great.’’
Bray said it was encouraging to see youths wanting to help out and thanked them for their effort.
‘‘I am so pleased they have done what they have done for us. I think it is a great little community initiative and it all helps, it really does,’’ he said.
Olls said Holsters Supplies donated all the nuts and bolts for the project while Surface Coatings donated the metal.
He said he was keen to see more students involved in similar projects.
‘‘I am keen to do this more for anyone that approaches us for this sort of thing,’’ he said.
‘‘It is great and especially nowadays I think students should be very much involved in the community more and more.’’
