Lynne and Peter Newell, the owners of Garden Edge in Hawera, say they were delighted with the quality of entries into their recent dress competition.

Lynne says she had the idea for the competition in her head for some years, and decided this year it was time to put it into action. Timed to coincide with the Powerco Taranaki Garden Festival and the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival, the competition asked entrants to create a life-size party dress out of flora and fauna.

“It was great to be able to showcase the amazing talent we have in the area,” says Lynne. She says entrants came from all over the region as well as from Whanganui.

With such an “unbelievable standard” of entries, Lynne says she and Peter were delighted to have Marie Tong, a milliner from Okaiawa, judge the entries. The winners were announced on Friday evening and the entries remain on display at Garden Edge until Sunday, November 4.

FAR LEFT: Judy Lane’s winning entry used paper bark, flax flowers, New Zealand wool, fur, lichen and roots.LEFT: Grace McCullum and Maddi Bradley created a design using succulents and flowers.

ABOVE: Linn Vincent’s entry was a lacquered leaf bodice with fern and peacock feathers.
