Manhunt sparked by shooting

BORN LEADER Dead man liked to ‘look after people’, says family. By Simon Maude.

THE aunty of a man shot dead in south Auckland says he was a caring family man.

Emergency services were called to the Winsford St, Manurewa house about 7.15am yesterday after reports a man had been shot in the stomach.

‘‘Police arrived to find a person in the driveway who has sustained a gun shot wound,’’ Detective Inspector Gary Lendrum said at a press conference.

Ambulance crews tried to save the 32-year-old man but he died at the scene just before 8.30am.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said her nephew ‘‘always looked after heaps of people’’.

She was last night rushing up from Wellington to join grieving relatives.

Family members were seen gathering near the house, believed to the home of the dead man’s mother, before a hearse arrived about 11am.

It was expected police would release the man’s body to his family today, the woman said.

Meanwhile police are looking to speak with 23-year-old Bodi McKee in relation to the shooting.

The two men were known to each other and had an ‘‘altercation’’ at the house before a firearm was presented, Lendrum said.

Police believe McKee is in possession of a firearm and warned that he should not be approached.

A nearby resident said at first he thought he had heard firecrackers in the early morning.

‘‘But it wasn’t a bang, it was muffled, one shot, that made me wary.’’

The man, who did not want to be named, said when he went outside to investigate he saw a ‘‘little dark green hatchback shoot off,’’ its wheel riding up on a curb as it raced away around the suburban street corner.

Before the shot rang out he had heard loud talking and ‘‘yells’’ coming from the house.
