Tipped truck threatens tracks

Sunday News - - NEWS -

A crashed truck blocking part of State Highway 1 was last night threatening to tip into the path of an oncoming train.

No one was injured after the truck tipped off the road near Waipapa Bay, about 20km north of Kaiko¯ura, at 2.30pm but traffic was at a standstill while a crane came from Christchurch to prevent the truck from falling further on to the tracks.

The accident happened on the final one-way section of SH1 heading north after Kaiko¯ura, meaning all traffic was stopped in both directions.

Motorist Oliver Lewis said traffic heading south was backed up about one or two kilometres beyond the Clarence River bridge.

Some drivers had been told to expect delays of up to two hours and one man was warning cars travelling from Blenheim to turn back, he said.
