‘‘Personally, having had my encounters with mental illness I felt obligated to do some good. I’d love it, if, when people see me out they don’t go ‘oh that’s that guy from The Bachelor’ and instead say ‘oh that’s the guy who’s done some really good work for mental health’,’’ he says.
Ruakere has chosen The Breast Cancer Foundation as her charity of choice following the 2015 death of her best friend Helena McAlpine, who, at 38, had lived with breast cancer for 10 years .
Ruakere says she has seen the foundation’s impact helping her friends and wha¯nau. "There’s a history of it in my wha¯nau. It is something that affects so many in our country – women and men. I’ve seen how committed and compassionate the wonderful Foundation wahine are, and I’d love to be able to help them,’’ she says.
