NZSO records bilin­gual clas­sic for PM’s baby

THE New Zealand Sym­phony Orches­tra has recorded a clas­sic Ger­man lul­laby in te reo for Prime Min­is­ter Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gay­ford’s baby.

The NZSO re­leased its per­for­mance of the fa­mous lul­laby, Cra­dle Song or Wiegen­lied, by 19th cen­tury Ger­man com­poser Jo­hannes Brahms on Thurs­day, with a mes­sage to the prime min­is­ter’s baby: ‘‘Moe mai ra¯ e te tau ki te moe mai e’’ (sleep now, my love, sleep).

Opera singer Simon O’Neil recorded the piece in te reo and Ger­man be­fore one of the orches­tra’s Welling­ton per­for­mances at the Michael Fowler Cen­tre.

He told RNZ Con­cert he planned the piece on his flight to the cap­i­tal.

Then, it all came to­gether – with the full orches­tra – that af­ter­noon dur­ing a dress re­hearsal last Satur­day.
