NZSO records bilingual classic for PM’s baby
THE New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has recorded a classic German lullaby in te reo for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford’s baby.
The NZSO released its performance of the famous lullaby, Cradle Song or Wiegenlied, by 19th century German composer Johannes Brahms on Thursday, with a message to the prime minister’s baby: ‘‘Moe mai ra¯ e te tau ki te moe mai e’’ (sleep now, my love, sleep).
Opera singer Simon O’Neil recorded the piece in te reo and German before one of the orchestra’s Wellington performances at the Michael Fowler Centre.
He told RNZ Concert he planned the piece on his flight to the capital.
Then, it all came together – with the full orchestra – that afternoon during a dress rehearsal last Saturday.
