Murderer demands $10k compo for jail fight ban
A Canterbury murderer and rapist demanded more than $10,000 in compensation from legal authorities – because he was upset at being banned from sparring in a prison gym.
Richard Lyall Genge, 44, is serving a life sentence for raping and killing a 22-year-old Christchurch woman Anne-Maree Ellens in the grounds of Christchurch East School in 1994.
But he complained authorities had displayed an "abuse of power" after he was punished for breaking rules over prisoners fighting or sparring.
Genge is a serial complainer – last year alone he lost four civil judgements and several legal challenges.
Now the law has had enough, and this week a judge dismissed his grab for cash and barred him from lodging any more judicial reviews after deciding he had abused the court process.
