Better go get your armour

In ‘Knightly News ‘ [December 12] Duncan Greive illustrated that he may have not yet attended a jousting tournament in New Zealand. For him to suggest that these events are for those interested in journeying to simpler times misses the point. The authenticity of the surrounding medieval village, range of challenging events, horsemanship and carefully crafted armour are all signals of a high level of finesse and detail. I would like Squire Greive to attend the “big one”, the Grail of Chivalry World Invitational Jousting Competition in Upper Hutt on 19-20 February. If he can make it we’ll introduce him to the Orcs – three scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed there. Paul Lambert, via email

Different strokes

Re: ‘Name and Shame’, December 12. Some years ago I read an article about some research which had concluded that children who were given strange names were, overall, less successful in later life than those with more traditional names. I suppose this wouldn’t worry children of rock stars or film actors, where money isn’t a consideration. Alan Milton, Cambridge

A happening thing

Well done on the improvements to Sunday
