Get in with the knit crowd

Sunday Star-Times - Sunday Magazine - - FASHION WITH KARLYA SMITH -

It’s entirely possible to accessorise your way out of a mid-winter dressing rut. This time of year, reaching for your warmest coat and most weathertight boots becomes a habit each morning. But adding an eye-catching accessory or two can breathe new life in to your favourite old coat, as well as distract from the fact you’re wearing it almost every day.

Take a few risks with your accessorising – life is too short for all black everything. If you group your accessories so that they co-ordinate tonally, you’ll get away with clashing patterns and avoid looking like you dressed in the dark, even though it’s likely you did.

Wool is hands-down my favourite fibre, for its ability to breathe while insulating, as well as its superpowers such as flame resistance and natural deodorising. Good quality wools and luxury fibres such as alpaca come at a cost, but they should also last you a number of seasons.

I’ve included a few of my favourite jerseys of the season – all recent releases designed for high winter. The common thread among them is a full sleeve. It can be difficult to stuff them into the fitted sleeves of a blazer or a tailored coat, but these sweaters are too good to cover up in any case.
