What’s the best dark chocolate?

-

With dark chocolate the latest trend in ‘‘superfoods’’ there are an increasing number of varieties on the market. But are some brands better than others?

We decided to help by comparing three leading brands of dark chocolate (70-72 per cent cocoa) for nutrition, cost and taste.

Nutrition comment

Cocoa is a ‘‘titan’’ when it comes to health benefits – it is one of the richest food sources of antioxidants, nature’s remedy for reducing risk of chronic disease and damage associated with ageing. It is also well known for its ability to boost mood.

But not all varieties are the same – those will more cocoa have more health benefits and more cocoa means less sugar and less unhealthy vegetable fats.

Bottom line

Nutritionally, the higher the cocoa content, the better for you a chocolate will be. Since all high cocoa varieties have similar health benefits, personal preference and price should best guide your choice.

Remember however, all chocolate is high in fat and as such high in calories. If you are above a healthy weight, the negative effects of excess calories will outweigh any potential health benefits!

Products are tested by New Zealand registered nutritionist Bronwen King and a diverse, randomly selected group.
