Dim whales

-

Interesting thoughts by Liz Palmer (Letters, February 19), that pilot whales may be deliberately stranding to bring to our attention the state of their oceans, thanks to our continual pollution.

Or could it perhaps be, that amongst the (guessing here) thousands or hundreds of thousands of pilot whale pods out there, that some are led by dimwitted, mature ‘‘alpha’’ males with sub-standard navigation skills, which have been handed down to inbred pod members. Pod members we continually throw back into the oceans, thereby thwarting their desperate attempts to sever the faulty gene chain.

Just a thought. D B Smith, Napier
