Kitesurf tragedy at wild beach

A kitesurfer has drowned at Muri­wai Beach on Auck­land’s west coast.

Emer­gency ser­vices were called to the in­ci­dent at 4pm yes­ter­day af­ter a mem­ber of the pub­lic found him on the beach.

Peter Clif­ford, who was out kitesurf­ing at the time, said it was a ‘‘sober­ing end’’ to the kitesurf­ing ses­sion.

‘‘There were about 15 to 20 of us kit­ing where it hap­pened,’’ he posted on the New Zealand Kitesurf­ing Face­book group.

‘‘He was search­ing for his board and got in trou­ble.’’

Police said they be­lieved he had been out kitesurf­ing when the tragedy oc­curred.

His body was air­lifted to cen­tral Auck­land and police were in the process of ad­vis­ing his next of kin.
