Kitesurf tragedy at wild beach
A kitesurfer has drowned at Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s west coast.
Emergency services were called to the incident at 4pm yesterday after a member of the public found him on the beach.
Peter Clifford, who was out kitesurfing at the time, said it was a ‘‘sobering end’’ to the kitesurfing session.
‘‘There were about 15 to 20 of us kiting where it happened,’’ he posted on the New Zealand Kitesurfing Facebook group.
‘‘He was searching for his board and got in trouble.’’

Police said they believed he had been out kitesurfing when the tragedy occurred.
His body was airlifted to central Auckland and police were in the process of advising his next of kin.
