Plastic hell

Sunday Star-Times - - FOCUS -

It has taken me some time to work out that my family and I are contributing to the thousands of plastic bags that go into landfills every day and don’t decompose for thousands of years, if ever.

Every day I go to the supermarket, there I am going through the checkout and blissfully unaware that I’m using yet another plastic bag, sometimes for just two items. The checkout person just opened up another plastic bag, and boom, in go my groceries.

What are we doing about this? Mmm, let’s see, not much? Some are – The Warehouse, Pak’ n save and FreshChoice use recyclable plastic bags, but what about the two main outfits, New World and Countdown? Basically, they’re doing nothing!

It’s time the supermarkets took a really hard stance. It’s only then we will see a difference to our landfills.
