Generosity gone

Sunday Star-Times - - FOCUS A11 OPINION -

For decades New Zealand has been a generous, warm and welcoming nation when dealing with refugees and asylum-seekers.

But in the past few years, despite actively supporting the nations whose military actions have destroyed their homes, lives and livelihoods, it seems to have become wrong to do so. Yet we still still back Saudi Arabia to bomb Yemen. We still back Britain and America to supply Saudi Arabia with the combat jets and guided munitions.

We seem more reluctant to call out an irrationally paranoid Australian government which thinks the detainees on Nauru are trash.

Hard to brag about our human rights when we behave like this.
