David Slack has found the Lord and is tak­ing com­fort in Proverbs (‘‘What I saw on judg­ment day’’, Fo­cus, October 22). One which is rel­e­vant which he may have over­looked is Proverbs 6:16. ‘‘There are six things that the Lord doth hate’’ One of them is a ly­ing tongue.

Steven Joyce in dis­cov­er­ing an $11.7 bil­lion fis­cal hole in Labour’s bud­get fell into this cat­e­gory. It was on a par with build­ing 10 bridges in North­land.

As Proverbs 10.23 says: ‘‘It is sport to a soul to do mis­chief: but a man of un­der­stand­ing hath wis­dom’’
