New Plymouth’s city centre was abuzz yesterday morning following an evacuation of the shopping mall and a medical emergency. About
9.15am Centre City Shopping Centre, on Gill St, held a fire drill which saw about 200 people, both staff and customers, milling about at different assembly points around the centre. Manager Ernie Heath said they planned a drill every six months and this was one of the ‘‘better ones’’.

15 minutes later, police, fire and two ambulance units were called to a medical emergency at ANZ Bank on Currie St. Police were called. St John’s spokeswoman Jess Miller said an elderly patient had been transferred to Taranaki Base Hospital in a critical condition.
