New Ply­mouth’s city cen­tre was abuzz yes­ter­day morn­ing fol­low­ing an evac­u­a­tion of the shop­ping mall and a med­i­cal emer­gency. About

9.15am Cen­tre City Shop­ping Cen­tre, on Gill St, held a fire drill which saw about 200 peo­ple, both staff and cus­tomers, milling about at dif­fer­ent assem­bly points around the cen­tre. Man­ager Ernie Heath said they planned a drill ev­ery six months and this was one of the ‘‘bet­ter ones’’.

‘‘It went re­ally well,’’ he said. ‘‘There were a cou­ple of miss­ing peo­ple who didn’t check out on their way out but we found them.’’ About

15 min­utes later, po­lice, fire and two am­bu­lance units were called to a med­i­cal emer­gency at ANZ Bank on Cur­rie St. Po­lice were called. St John’s spokes­woman Jess Miller said an el­derly pa­tient had been trans­ferred to Taranaki Base Hos­pi­tal in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion.
