Wind warning for Taranaki

Taranaki Daily News - - News -

A strong wind warning will be in force in Taranaki later today.

The forecast is for southeasterly gales, with severe gusts of 120 kilometres an hour in exposed places, especially north of and near Mt Taranaki.

‘‘Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles,’’ MetService said.

The warning is valid from 5pm today to 1am tomorrow.

A deep low was expected to move across central New Zealand last night.

‘‘Strong cold southerlies in the wake of this low are likely to bring snow to low levels over many South Island areas and severe southerly gales to parts of central New Zealand and also Taranaki during Friday,’’ MetService said.

The Kaiko¯ura coast, Marlborough Sounds and Wellington also have strong wind warnings.

Elsewhere, a heavy snow warning is in place for Canterbury and Marlborough (south of Ward) today, and northwest Nelson has a heavy rain warning in place.
