New Zealand skies could become a lot busier as police and the Defence Force eye up extending their drone use for operations. A New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson said they had a joint project under way to acquire a remotely piloted aircraft system, or RPAS, capable of being launched and recovered from a ship. Minister of Defence Ron Mark announced the decision to buy four P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft in July. At the time, he said the Government would also consider options for a complementary maritime surveillance capability, which included RPAS, smaller manned aircraft, or satellites for additional maritime surveillance tasks.
