Cheap lettuces lead 8.7pc drop in cost of vegetables
Lettuce prices fell 45 per cent in September 2018, to an average of $1.81 a head, Statistics New Zealand says. They were down 30 per cent for the year. ‘‘Prices reached an all-time high of $5.42 for a 500-gram head of lettuce in July 2018 due to poor weather. But since then we’ve had two major price falls,’’ Statistics NZ consumer prices manager Geraldine Duoba said. Overall, food prices were almost unchanged in September (down 0.1 per cent), but showed a slight rise after seasonal adjustment (up 0.3 per cent). Vegetable prices fell 8.7 per cent, influenced by lower prices for lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. But meat and poultry prices rose 2 per cent, influenced by higher prices for beef and chicken.
