THE WEEK THIS ISSUE went to print, Auck­land was en­joy­ing a rare late-win­ter sunny spell. It’s amaz­ing what a hit of vi­ta­min D can do to im­prove your mood and pro­duc­tiv­ity, which is ex­actly what I needed on dead­line week! Also amaz­ing is the ef­fect it has on your ap­petite; all of a sud­den I find my­self dream­ing of crisp sal­ads and light pasta dishes, or a piece of del­i­cate white fish cooked in but­ter and dressed sim­ply with a lick of lemon and a sprin­kling of capers.

This prob­a­bly also has some­thing to do with the in­spi­ra­tion I’ve found in the pages of this issue. Our clever con­trib­u­tors have re­ally gone to town with new-sea­son good­ness and I want to make ab­so­lutely every­thing! First on the list is def­i­nitely our cover recipe by new team mem­ber Jo Wil­cox (meet her on page 11). We think it per­fectly il­lus­trates our food phi­los­o­phy of “easy but im­pres­sive”. An­other fave from the issue is our ex­tract from Al Brown’s new book, Eat Up, on page 110. It’s not out un­til later in September, but he let us give you guys a sneak peek. I think it’s his best work yet and it’s go­ing to take pride of place on my cof­fee ta­ble. Cheers to a new sea­son and let’s hope for plenty more sun­shine to come!
