Taupo win ur­ban ride


Taupo’s Lion’s Walk has been the voted the best of the busi­ness as it takes out the Ur­ban Ride or Com­mute cat­e­gory as a top place to ride.

The NZ Trans­port Agency’s an­nual Favourite Places to Ride com­pe­ti­tion proved more pop­u­lar than ever as they re­ceived al­most 10,000 nom­i­na­tions across the four cat­e­gories - Nga Haerenga – NZ Cy­cle Trail, Off-Road or Ad­ven­ture Ride, Ur­ban Ride or Com­mute and Com­mu­nity Fa­cil­ity.

Taupo was the only place in the coun­try to have a ride in the top three of ev­ery cat­e­gory.

The Great Lake Trail also placed sec­ond in the Nga Haerenga – NZ Cy­cle Trail cat­e­gory, Kids Bike Taupo placed sec­ond in the Com­mu­nity Fa­cil­ity cat­e­gory and Craters Moun­tain Bike Park placed third in the Off Road/Ad­ven­ture Ride cat­e­gory.

The shared cy­cling and walk­ing path, fol­low­ing the shores of Lake Taupo¯ from the town cen­tre to Five Mile Bay, com­peted against 24 other rides to be named New Zealand’s best ur­ban ride.

‘‘We are thrilled that our lake­front trail has gained na­tional recog­ni­tion,’’ said Damian Coutts, Gen­eral Man­ager of Des­ti­na­tion Great Lake Taupo¯ .
