Book awards again for Bixley
Having taken out best illustrator for the last three years, Taupo’s Donovan Bixley, is again in the running.
Last week saw the announcement of the finalists for the 2017 Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Bixley was named as one of the finalists in the The Russell Clark Illustration Award category for his fourth year running.
The book nominated, Fuzzy Doodle, was written by Melinda Szymanik and illustrated by Bixley.
It relates to the story book, The Hungry Caterpillar but tells the tale of a scribble turning into a visual piece of art.
Being illustrated in mainly inks and pencils, Bixley said it was Asian inspired and was completely different to his former pieces of work.
‘‘Last year was my Shakespeare book and I’ve done books about dinosaurs, cartoon works and realistic works,’’ he said.
‘‘This one was completely different again.’’
Bixley described illustrating another author’s book as the best of both worlds.
‘‘I am enjoying the best of both worlds writing and illustrating my own and then being offered to do this from another brilliant author.’’
Bixley is also up for Best Picture Book. The awards will be announced in August.
