Motoring club is a path to racing
Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park now has a club people can join, giving them access to races.
The park is New Zealand’s only internationally rated motorsport track and the club is designed to get more people out on the track and involved with motorsport.
For volunteer joining via the Marshals register, club membership is free. Otherwise it is $75 for the first year and $50 a year thereafter.
General membership is open to anyone who wants to gain driving experience, or enter race events at the track. General membership has track day and garaging discount benefits and a club room facility. Premier membership includes unlimited event, track access, garaging and a private lounge.
The Circuit Club is a Motorsport NZ affiliated club through which members can apply for the race licensing necessary to complete in MNZ permitted events.
The Circuit Club formation creates a New Zealand first with a multi-sport register catering for cars, bikes, drift/burnout and drag racing interests.
Another initiative set to start later this month is the circuit’s Driver Training Academy.
‘‘This is a very exciting part of the package as we want to be able to help all-comers with technical driving experience’’ said Tony Walker, administrator for the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park.
‘‘This is not just about racing it’s about helping people at an introductory level to understand how to become part of a motor vehicle, to understand what happens when you want a car to go around a corner, and how to stop it, in a hurry if need be. Our research shows the many people don’t know how to operate ABS braking properly, and as a result they often hit the very thing ABS is designed to help them avoid’’.
The Academy will run motorsport introductory programmes and plans are underway for ‘‘over 60s’ track days’’ aimed at keeping the older generation sharp on the roads and an open track day is planned for the early part of spring.
‘‘We aim to ensure Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park is at the forefront of the future of motorsport and this is something our team are always looking to improve every week, so watch this space!’’.
Bruce McLaren’s Motorsport Park hosts hundreds of rotary earlier this year.
