Dream car races the tracks
Lots of people out there love their cars so much, the Taupo Times thought it had better share some of that passion with a news series entitled -
Our first profile is Cam Stephens and his pride and joy - a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, 2000cc, 6-speed manual.
His love of cars started from a young age and he has been dreaming of owning such a car since the age of 10.
That dream cam true two years ago and on Saturday he took it out for his first ever event on the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park track.
Saturday’s ‘Street Fighters’ event served as a way to finally settle the war between Mitsubishi and Subaru and gave the car lovers from near and far a chance to enter their pride and joy into races and cruises to show what their cars do.
The day had cars tackling the Bruce McLaren race track, skidding up the skid pad, drag races between the two makes of car, and also a cruising event which let passengers experience the turns and abouts of the popular track.
Stephens said the event was where all the Subaru and Evo enthusiasts came together.
It was a place to mix, mingle and share a passion for cars. He said everyone has a mutual understanding and pride in their cars.
Stephens said his choice of car was not too expensive and it was easy enough to look after.
Working at Henson & Murray Engine Rebuilders was also an advantage and he said if anything happened to his car, he could easily fix it.
When it was time to race and show off his pride and joy, the speedo’ touched 190km/h coming along the BMC’s long straight and he flew past two others on the corner.
He also experienced his first ‘track tassel’.
He said the track was good to drive on. He had an idea of what it would be like because he got the opportunity to experience the track earlier.
‘‘The best part of the day is the racing and the cruising,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ll keep doing it, I’m hooked now.’’ Stevens said he really enjoyed the day and it was good to see fellow enthusiasts all around him taking part.
