Additional councillor proposed
The ratio of councillors to residents in the TurangiTongariro ward [one councillor per 2,475 people] is 33 per cent higher than the district average [1 to 3681], Tina Jakes said.
Residents are also overrepresented in the MangakinoPoukani ward, with a ratio of 1:2860.
The new system, with five wards, will mean the ‘‘fair representation rule’’ is met, Jakes said.
The review also recommends the existing Turangi-Tongariro Community Board structure be continued.
All councillors present at Tuesday’s meeting voted to send the proposal out for public consultation. Councillors John Williamson and Rosie Harvey were absent.
Feedback on the proposal, via submissions, will be sought from June 8 until July 16. The council will decide on the representation proposal at the end of August, following feedback.
Keeping the status quo is also an option.
Local Government New Zealand will make the final determination by April 2019, ahead of the 2019 local body elections.
