Snowy blast closes many roads

MICHAEL DALY Snow has closed the Desert Road and chains are required on some South Island highways on Thursday, with MetService warning there could be more falls ahead.

The NZ Transport Agency was also warning drivers to take care on the Napier-Taupo¯ Road early Thursday because of snow, and on several highway routes in the South Island because of snow and, in some cases, also ice.

In an update at 7.45am, NZTA said the Desert Road remained closed, and advised drivers to expect delays on the detour route.

MetService said some more snow was possible early on Thursday to 500 metres in the lower North Island, and possibly to 400m in Canterbury and 600m in Otago, Southland and Fiordland.

Some heavy rain was still falling in the eastern North Island early Thursday, so there was a chance of more snow on the Napier-Taupo¯ Road early, MetService forecaster Nick Zacher said.

MetService has road snow warnings out for the NapierTaupo¯ Road, Arthurs Pass, Porters Pass, Lindis Pass, Crown Range Road and Milford Road.
