Taupō hockey is tops
Taupo¯ senior hockey is on fire, with the women’s team winning the Bay of Plenty Senior Women’s competition, the men’s team winning the Senior Men’s Hawke’s Bay competition, three players selected for the Bay of Plenty/Tauranga team in the Men’s National Senior Tournament, and another three players selected to represent New Zealand at the 2019 Masters World Cup in Spain.
Taupo¯ Hockey development manager Wendy Milne says the wins are a great achievement, considering Taupo¯ is such a small area and this is only the second year Taupo¯ Hockey has had a team in the Hawke’s Bay competition. She adds this is also the first year the club has had enough players to have two women’s teams. “The other women’s team placed fourth in the Bay of Plenty Senior Women’s competition, which we were all pretty stoked about.”
James Lineham, Hugh Mitchell and Robbie Hollander also played in the Bay of Plenty/Tauranga men’s team where they placed eighth overall at the tournament in Wellington. Robyn Harrison, Rose Prisk and Chris Brasell, all current senior players for Taupo¯ Hockey, will represent New Zealand at the Masters World Cup to be held in Terrassa, Spain, in July 2019.
Wendy says the club is pretty happy with the results, with many planning on playing hockey over the summer to keep up their skills and fitness during the off-season.
“Summer hockey is really fun, there are teams for all player levels and I would encourage people to join a team and come along,” says Wendy.
