An­i­mals great and small to be blessed

Furred or feath­ered. Great or small. Well-be­haved and maybe just a lit­tle bit naughty — they are all wel­come at St An­drew’s Angli­can Church this Sun­day, Oc­to­ber 7 at 10am for the an­nual Bless­ing of the An­i­mals fam­ily ser­vice.

In as­so­ci­a­tion with the Taupo¯ SPCA, the church in­vites all crea­tures on leads or in cages to an an­nual ser­vice com­mem­o­rat­ing the fes­ti­val of St Fran­cis of As­sisi. The rad­i­cal 13th cen­tury monk be­came fa­mous for be­ing just as likely to preach to an­i­mals as to hu­man be­ings and is known as the pa­tron saint of an­i­mals and the en­vi­ron­ment.

It is cus­tom­ary for Catholic and Angli­can churches to hold cer­e­monies bless­ing an­i­mals on his feast day each Oc­to­ber and all pets able to fit through the front door, and their own­ers are wel­come at the Bless­ing of the An­i­mals.

Bring your pre­cious pet or a pho­to­graph of a loved pet no longer here, to re­ceive a spe­cial bless­ing. As part of the ser­vice, do­na­tions of money or food for any type of an­i­mal for the Taupo¯ SPCA An­i­mal Cen­tre are wel­come at the ser­vice or can be left in the box pro­vided in the church.
