Arriving at the destination, a casual count indicated at least 70 visitors anticipating the spectacular water release. The lethargic water upstream of the dam flowing inexorably to the Tasman Sea was an immense contrast to the foaming and raging torrent that develops within minutes of water release from the dam. The rapids were used in films The Hobbit and Yogi Bear and certainly in the latter, extras from the district were employed. Homeward, there was only one sighting of a speeding jetboat as it made a fleeting visit to the dam. Further information regarding these regular walks is available from Bernie on 378 9229.
