A timely question from Sandra Greenslade about statues ( Taupo & Turangi Weekender, October 4). There was once a rose garden and plaque commemorating Kate Sheppard outside Tūrangi Library. Ten or more years ago Friends of the Tūrangi Library tried unsuccessfully to have this garden restored after it was removed when the library was renovated. My least favourite insult this year has been the move by Victoria University of Wellington Council to have ‘Victoria’ removed from the title of the university. After 120 years of existence and worldwide recognition, the reasons for this move also defy the understanding of many.
So, Sandra, it’s not only in the regions that these insensitivities occur! LORRAINE WILSON
