Win starts new season

Taupo & Turangi Weekender - - News - — Jerome Dyer

GM Painters Lake Taupo¯ Cricket Club Premier have started the 2018/2019 Baywide season in the best possible way, claiming an emphatic win in their first T20 against Tauranga Boys College Premier.

LTCC captain Habib Malik won the toss and sent Tauranga in to bat on the early season artificial wicket in Rotorua. Opening paceman Roger Urbahn found his line and length after an early wobble and quickly sent the Tauranga openers back to the pavilion.

Bay of Plenty representatives Tim Pringle and Tim Clarke toiled away before pressure bowling from John Dolan and Malik forced them into false shots with great catches from Will Perry and Jack Wiggins. Tight bowling in the middle orders from Perry, Joshua McNeish and Raymond How kept the run rate in check. Urbahn picked up a couple more late wickets to keep Tauranga restricted to 136 for the loss of 7 wickets. D Preston was the pick of the batsman with a gritty 47 not out. Taupo¯’s opening pair of Michael Mitchell and How batted intelligently and without risk to get LTCC within 20 before How was undone by Pringle on 60. Urbahn chimed in with a very quick 16 including a sprawling lap shot over short fine leg. Mitchell steadied the ship with a very solid 48 not out with impressive running between the stumps guiding the team to a well-deserved victory with two overs to spare.

An excellent start to LTCC’s second season in the Premier competition. UK recruits Mitchell and Ewan Williams will fit nicely into the club’s culture both on and off the field with some solid vocals shown in the van trip home.

LTCC Premier continue with T20s against Central and Cadets in Tauranga next weekend while LTCC Reserves kick off their season in Rotorua.

Results: Tauranga Boys College 136/7 D Preston 47, R Urbahn 4-35, J Dolan 2-22. Lake Taupo Cricket Club 137/1 R How 60, M Mitchell 48*, T Pringle 1-36.
