Being named the dux for 2018 caps a year of hard work and success for Tauhara College student Fergus Byett. Proxime Accessit was jointly awarded to Stephen Parinas and Jack McNeill.

A great all rounder, Fergus is also head boy at Tauhara College, a role that he says has its own ‘busyness’ to it.

An outstanding musician, Fergus achieved distinction when in October he was awarded a piano performance diploma to become an Associate of the Trinity College London (ATCL). The tertiary diploma gives him the right to add the letters ATCL after his name, and his piano teacher Lenice Frisken says it has been a pleasure to teach Fergus and see him grow musically.

“He is a very capable and talented musician and composer who has worked diligently to get where he is today.”

Earlier this year Fergus won the IRMTNZ Rotorua-Taupo Senior Scholarship and the SOUNZ/NZCF Choral Composition Competition for his original four-part score titled Karaka Akau. Next up is a written exam for an AMusTCL diploma in music theory and composition plus level 3 NCEA exams. In 2019 he will begin a Bachelor of Music at Waikato.
