Keeping fit, having fun at fitness club

Te Awamutu Courier - - News -

Making friends, keeping fit and having a laugh is what exercise group Young at Heart is all about.

The group of seniors meets twice a week at the Pirongia Community Chapel on Crozier St.

Norma Cleverly-Tuatara officially runs the class but says it’s a group effort.

Young at Heart does a variety of cardio exercises and weights for about 45 minutes.

“It’s a fun and social class suitable for beginners,” Norma says.

“It’s all inclusive and nobody judges each other.”

Norma says it’s important for seniors to keep fit.

“The older we get the more important it is to keep up flexibility and fitness.”

The group has been meeting for the last two and a half years and in that time members have become increasingly strong and flexible.

The twice-weekly class is a decent workout — but the socialising is just as important, Norma says.

Every third Friday the group goes out for coffee after the class.

“I just love the interactions,” Norma says.

“Some of the members live alone, so the companionship is so important.”

Entry is $2 to cover the cost of hiring the building. Excess money goes towards exercise equipment which Norma sources from local op shops.

Young at Heart meets at the Pirongia Community Chapel on Crozier St on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.15am.
